Technical Terms Explained

E-commerce/ E-Store - Any online transaction of buying and selling where business is done via electronic medium such as the Internet.

 

Backend (Back Office) - An administrator end where shop owner have the flexibility to update content and product catalogues, pricing etc using a user-friendly interface (control panel).

 

Payment Gateways - Online payment method and service for sending money via the Internet such as Paypal.

 

Shopping Cart - An internet based system or software designed to allow an online shopper to collect items and then, when the user is ready, to purchase the chosen items.

 

SSL - Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a global standard security technology developed by Netscape in 1994. It creates an encrypted link between a web server and a web browser to ensure that all data transmitted remains private and secure. Millions of consumers recognize the "golden padlock" which appears in their browser to indicate they are viewing a secure web page.
E-commerce site (usually payment processing/ transaction part of the site) with SSL security will be indicated by browser, starting with https. The "s" indicates a secure connection.

 

Hosting - A service that provides web space for a website which makes it available for others to see on the Internet.

 

Domain - Web address that appears in the URL field of a browser.
